中国的燃料乙醇产业是有的，而且做得不错，之所以不为人知是因为国情不同。2001年开始国家就已经在9个省市进行乙醇汽油试点工作。其中黑龙江、吉林、辽宁、河南、安徽、广西6省全面使用；其它省市包括巴彦淖尔市、乌海市、江苏省徐州、连云港、淮安、盐城、宿迁6市；山东省济南、枣庄、济宁、泰安、临沂、聊城、菏泽7市；湖北省武汉、襄樊、荆门、随州、孝感、十堰、宜昌、黄石、鄂州9市；河北省石家庄、保定、邢台、邯郸、沧州、衡水6市。同年批准成立燃料乙醇试点企业。2005年时产量达到50万吨，对燃料乙醇的生产和应用跃居世界第三。2006年的时候产量达到160万吨，与2001年的3万吨相比增长超过50倍。问题在这个时候开始显现。当时我国是借鉴美国经验，燃料乙醇的主要原料使用玉米。玉米是中国的主要粮食之一，在温饱问题刚解决不久的中国，这种需要消耗大量粮食，占据大量耕地的生产方式是行不通的，所以在2006年的12月发改委采取一系列措施限制使用企业生产，现在中国燃料乙醇主要的研究方向是从非粮作物中炼制生物燃料。这里要说明一下为什么燃料乙醇在巴西能得到如此重用。巴西燃料乙醇的主要原料是甘蔗。巴西是世界最大的甘蔗生产国和出口国，甘蔗供远大于求，大量炼制燃料乙醇可以消耗多余的甘蔗，增加财政收入，减少废气，对巴西显然利大于弊，当然大量发展。而中国粮食安全问题在偏远落后地区依然严峻，通过消耗粮食来生产当下并不迫切需要的燃料乙醇，在很多人看起来就是浪费，也不符合国情。可用于生产乙醇的非粮作物包括甜高粱，木薯，甘蔗，秸秆，废弃木料以及某些城市垃圾。中国目前主要集中于秸秆炼制燃料乙醇的项目上，目前秸秆主要用于田地天然施肥，用途较窄，国家一直在推行秸秆利用多样化，将秸秆炼制燃料是一条好出路。但秸秆中的有用成分是纤维素，纤维素制乙醇工业化难度较大，效率低且污染较大，所以一直未能广泛推广。不过这个状况可能会得到转变，2014年华东理工大学在这方面的研究就有了重大的突破，提出干法炼制木质纤维素，乙醇占比达到9%，且污染比较少。目前已经取得专利并和一家公司达成合作，开始批量生产。未来中国的燃料乙醇事业会怎样，我们还是拭目以待吧。
